Jacksonville is the largest city in the contiguous United States in land area. Do you know what that means? More space for fun and entertainment than almost anywhere else! Discover the many attributes that combine to make Jacksonville an ideal vacation destination for everyone, regardless of areas of interest!
History buffs can rest assured that their time here will be well spent, with tons of museums and historic attractions to keep them busy from morning until night, day in and day out. Fort Caroline National Memorial is a wonderful way to spend the day browsing through ancient French artifacts and learning about the settlers who built the first Protestant colony in the United States. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy once the hunger sets in, as there are many fabulous and shaded picnic areas available.
Grab a bite at any of the hundreds of thousands of eateries that are located in Jacksonville. Depending on what part of town you are in, you will find succulent seafood restaurants or gourmet Italian eateries. Maybe you're craving some good old-fashioned BBQ. You won't have to look far, for these establishments are scattered throughout the city, just as about every kind of restaurant imaginable.
Many restaurants found along the coast are located on Atlantic Avenue. This area is ideal for indulging in a fabulous meal, then washing it down with your drink of choice, as many places transform into an after-hours bar or dance club shortly after the sun sets.
This area is also known for excellent and somewhat eclectic shopping, with many tourist-geared shops lining the streets. Knick-knacks, souvenirs, 5 for $10 t-shirt stands, and seashells in a bottle are never out of stock here, as the steady flow of sandy foot traffic pumps life into this laid back, beachy part of town.
Another area that is heavily traveled is the Jacksonville Landing, located along the north bank of the St. Johns River, offering waterfront dining, shopping, dancing, and entertainment. The hustle and bustle of daytime visitors is constant as they browse through stores and enjoy delectable dishes and refreshing drinks from the many restaurant options. The Landing doesn't lose the crowd at night, though, as it plays host to even more people! From courtyard entertainment complete with a dazzling fountain show to the handful of clubs and bars located here, it is understandable why the Landing is incredibly popular with tourists and locals alike.
In town for Football Season? Great! Catch the hometown team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing a game at their intimidating stadium, the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. (It's only intimidating if you're routing for the other team, of course.)
Other sport enthusiasts can participate in a game of golf at any of the many courses found in Jacksonville. Partake in a leisurely or invigorating game; you set the pace. The lush greens of local country clubs are available for a fabulous way to start your day or the perfect way to unwind.
Want to catch a little sun on your vacation? Well then, head over to one of the area beaches for a salty, sandy, golden-brown (or red) adventure. Bring a frisbee or a football, or jump into one of the many on-going Volleyball games. Or if you prefer, simply set up your chair and umbrella and soak in the ocean ambiance and warming sunrays while listening to the water lap at the edge of your feet.
Okay, your fun-filled day is coming to a close and your night is open to suggestions. Hopefully you've been pondering possible venues throughout your day, as the list is quite long. The nightlife in Jacksonville is incredibly varied, from country clubs to beach bars, to hypnotic dance clubs to hole-in-the-wall pubs. It depends on your particular scene, but whatever you enjoy, you're sure to find many others nearby who share your opinion of a perfect night under the stars (or strobe).
So, now it should be apparent that Jacksonville is a town of many faces; a place where you and your entire family and group of friends can come on vacation and find entertaining venues and activities perfect to suit everyone's idea of a "good time".
